Assurance of Forgiveness
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 1st John 1:9 (NIV)
Participation in sexual impurity is both sinful and unrighteous. It is not the life that God has in mind for us and it will block us from many of the blessings He has in mind for us. Yes, it is true that God blesses both the righteous and unrightesous for God is good even when we are not. But, there are additional blessings that belong to the righteous that we cannot have if we decide to disobey his will for us. Read more
Sexual Impurity and the Supernatural Fight
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints. Ephesians 6:10-18 (NIV)
All of us who are caught up in sexual sins and compulsions, whether we want to admit it or not, made a choice to participate in them. Later on, our ability to choose was greatly diminished as the bondage of addiction and the power of sin overcame us. For those who are not caught in sexual acting out, it seem preposterous that anyone to claim to be a sexual addict or sexaholic. But for those of us who are, or have been, caught within this sin’s grip, we know what it is like to be enslaved to something that we know we need to quit but don’t know how. Read more
Discipleship is the best form of accountability
by Luke Gilkerson, Blog Editor for Covenant Eyes
Accountability is one of the foundational principles of Covenant Eyes. Our software is a tool that allows people to take another step in vulnerability and honesty.
What Christian men and women often think about when they hear “accountability” is a small group sitting in a circle discussing their failures and addictions. They may picture a late night phone call to another struggling brother to confess the latest blunder. For those who need to get their sins into the open, this type of accountability can be therapeutic.
Peer accountability and support groups can be helpful, but many times these situations end up being “the blind leading the blind.” Confession of failure is expected in these settings, but lasting change is often not expected. I’m not talking about the quality accountability that helps people get to the root of their temptations or addictions and uses the Word of God to transform thinking. I’m talking about the kind of minimal “accountability” that serves more as a way to ease one’s conscience, like a band-aid over a cancerous lump. Read more
Assurance of Deliverance
No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it. 1st Corinthians 10:12
For each person there is a besetting sin. But for those of us who suffer from sexual addictions and compulsions, the lust of the eyes is one is the most tempting to us. Read more
Sex and the Assurance of Answered Prayer
Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which trancends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV)
People who have sexual addictions and compulsions, such as the constant viewing of internet pornography, do so for a reason. They have an inner pain yet to be faced. Rather than examine what’s hurting on the inside, they medicate with sexual pleasure and live in denial about what they are doing. The longer they do this the more pain they create for themselves as grief, shame and blame mount up. Christ wants to heal our inner condition and stop the cycle pain we keep inflicting upon ourselves. He wants to replace it with the peace of God. Read more
